Trade Names: hCG, Ovidrel, Pregnyl
Chemical Names: Gonadotrophin
Routes: Intramuscular or Subcutaneous
1. Product Composition
Each box of Chorgon 5000 typically contains:
- 1 Ampoule/Vial of Powder: Lyophilized (freeze-dried) HCG.
- 1 Ampoule of Solvent: Usually $1\text{ml}$ of Sodium Chloride (saline) or sterile water for injection.
2. Reconstitution (The Mixing Process)
Handling the powder correctly is critical because HCG is a delicate peptide hormone.
- Preparation: Clean your workspace and wash your hands. Use an alcohol swab to wipe the rubber stoppers of both vials.
- Drawing the Liquid: Use a larger gauge needle (like a 22G or 23G) to draw the $1\text{ml}$ of solvent into the syringe.
- The "Trickle" Method: Insert the needle into the powder vial. Do not spray the liquid directly onto the powder. Aim the needle at the glass wall of the vial so the liquid trickles down.
- No Shaking: Gently swirl or roll the vial between your palms until the solution is clear. Never shake it, as this can destroy the protein chains and make the medication ineffective.
3. Administration Protocol
- Needle Choice: For the actual injection, most people switch to a smaller insulin syringe ($27\text{G}$ to $31\text{G}$) for comfort.
- Injection Sites:
- Subcutaneous (Sub-Q): The most common method. Inject into the fatty tissue of the abdomen (at least 2 inches away from the belly button).
- Intramuscular (IM): Injected into the glute (buttocks) or outer thigh.
- The Math: If you mix $1\text{ml}$ of liquid with $5,000\text{iu}$ of powder:
- $0.1\text{ml}$ (10 units on an insulin syringe) = 500iu
- $0.2\text{ml}$ (20 units) = 1,000iu
4. Critical Storage Rules
- Unmixed: Can be stored at room temperature (below $25^\circ\text{C}$), but in warmer climates like Ahmedabad, it is safer to keep it in the refrigerator.
- Mixed (Reconstituted): Once mixed, Chorgon must be refrigerated ($2^\circ\text{C}$ to $8^\circ\text{C}$).
- Potency Window: After mixing, it begins to lose its strength. It is best used within 30 days. If the solution becomes cloudy or contains particles, discard it.
5. Common Side Effects
- Injection Site: Temporary redness or slight swelling.
- Hormonal: Increased libido, mild acne, or water retention.
- Note for Men: If used for PCT or testosterone support, watch for nipple sensitivity (a sign of rising estrogen), which may require an aromatase inhibitor.
